August 31, 2010

As per Phyllis's request, here's an update. Mom's 49th birthday was yesterday, but she didn't feel much like celebrating, or she celebrated unbeknownst to me and then needed to make a trip to the hospital to get some fluids. She didn't have to spend the night, just a few hours, and I believe it has helped to perk her up a little today.

She had an infusion treatment on Friday and all of her labs came back normal, including her liver enzymes and electrolytes. She's had some medicine changes over the last couple weeks, with Dr. Torres trying to find a balance between the benefits and side effects of the medications. She's just not really had much of an appetite for a few weeks now, seeing that almost everything she does eat makes her sick. She came home from her treatment and rested awhile, then felt good enough to come watch me on the sidelines at the Preston High game.

Where has August gone??? Football season is here, school has started, fall will be here before we know it. From what I understand of what Mom has conveyed to me, the doctors are unsure of what has caused her liver to be enlarged; however, the test for c-diff came back negative. That's great news, but we still don't know what is causing all the GI problems. The new medication that the doctor prescribed wasn't working out, so she has stopped taking it altogether.

We treated Mom to her early birthday present (her birthday is August 30) and had a fabulous time at the Paul McCartney concert on Wednesday night! 3 hours of absolutely wonderful music!!! Best concert I've EVER seen, by far, and the best 3 hours of my life! It was a long day for Mom and I think she's still trying to recover. She spent most of Thursday resting and trying to recover from more nausea and vomiting. I think Friday was puke-free! She's spent most of today resting, as well. Her next infusion treatment will be on Friday and hopefully they'll have some answers and solutions to what's going on.

Football practice is in full swing and I've been busy with that so I haven't had much time to do anything at the house. I'm hoping to get the bathroom tile well underway next Saturday and maybe be entirely moved in by early September. Who knows!

August 13, 2010

Mom was able to take part of her infusion treatment today, but Dr. Torres decided that he didn't want her to have one of the medications due to the GI trouble she's been having for the last 2 weeks. In spite of her stay in the hospital last Monday, she's gotten little relief. She'll have some more tests run to determine what exactly is causing all of her problems, but an ultrasound from the ER visit revealed an enlarged liver. Dr. Torres is unsure of what may be causing this, so he's changed one of her medications and ordered some tests. One test will specifically determine whether or not Mom has c difficile or "c diff". Apparently this is a bacterial infection that occurs in the intestines due to use of antibiotics. Antibiotics kill of the good bacteria in the intestines, as well as the bad bacteria that makes us sick. When the good bacteria is gone, the intestines are more susceptible to other bacterial infections, such as c difficile. Hopefully these tests will reveal what's going on and Dr. Torres will be able to make the necessary changes to take care of everything.

I'm going to be out of town this weekend so don't expect any updates right away. Football season is well underway as we just finished up two-a-day practices earlier today. Teachers report back to school on Monday and students will have their first day on Thursday. We're all very excited that we'll be seeing Paul McCartney in concert on Wednesday evening. We're celebrating Mom's 49th birthday a little early!

Continue to remember Mom in your prayers. She's not one to complain, but I know it's been a rough couple weeks and we'll all be relieved to get things taken care of quickly.

August 3, 2010

Mom got to come home from the hospital this afternoon. She's feeling much better now and has been able to eat and drink without trouble, so far. It's so comforting to have her home and back to her "normal" self.

August 2, 2010

I realize it's been a long time since my last post. Things have been busy here. Mom had her infusion on Friday and had been having a lot of trouble with nausea over the weekend. She had barely eaten anything since Friday evening and when I got home from practice today, she'd had little improvement. This evening she just wasn't feeling right, having some confusion and feeling disoriented, so about 7:00, she decided I should take her to the ER. It's just after 3:00 a.m. and she was admitted to the hospital. They have run some tests and aren't too concerned about infection, but are concerned with dehydration. She was given anti-nausea medication and fluids and was starting to feel somewhat better at around 2:00; although, she still was a little confused and "not feeling like herself." Please lift her up in your prayers. And the rest of us, too. It's very difficult to stand by while someone you love is going through everything Mom has had to endure in the past several months. I'm overwhelmed with so many emotions right now and find it hard to sort things out and know just how to feel and react all the time, let alone what to say and how to say it. I'm trying to keep everyone updated, but it's hard to face the reality of what's happening sometimes. Thank you all for your prayers.
